What readers have said about Treat Your Own Back:
I am doing what I love again - thanks to your book Paul , New Zealand , paul@flowvisuals.co.nz, 2006
I am so happy to have come across your book "Treat Your Own Back". I'm 19 years old and I suffered from intense back pain for about a year. I ride freestyle BMX every day I can, but my back pain was stopping me from doing what I love. My mum gave me your book after I had tried physio for a while without any results. I was willing to do anything to fix my back and get back on my bike, so reading a small book was no biggie, but to be honest, I wasn't expecting any real results.
I committed to changing my posture and doing the exercises in the book and now I've been back on my bike for quite some time. I do still have a slight bit of pain every now and then (because of the posture while riding a BMX) but now I can control the problem. Anyway, thanks to you, I'm now doing what I love again and I can't thank you enough for that! I don't know what I would be doing now if it weren't for your book. Thank you so much!
I have found what I wanted. Robert Berkovitz, D.C., Cert. MDT - California - 2010
I have been practicing chiropractic for 18 years here in Ventura, CA. I greatly enjoyed my chiropractic education. And I was proud to graduate from my school. However, nothing in the past 18 years has given me as much pride, satisfaction, or success in helping my clients as the McKenzie Method. After years of searching for a rational, scientific approach to back pain I have found what I wanted and what my clients needed in Mr McKenzie's Method. Please pass my thanks and gratitude to Mr McKenzie. McKenzie strategy rescued my back Richard Garner, London, April 24, 2007 In 1982 I suffered a PID and after much grief was lucky enough to have 2 weeks hospital traction which worked wonders at the time. The following year, too anxious to get back to work quickly (as a joiner) I suffered a relapse and misery revisited. My local GP just told me to get used to it (I was 30) and just kept writing sick notes. Finally despairing at this I presented myself at my local hospital, the Royal Free, London, with no referral, to seek any advice. Enter Robin Mckenzie, about to deliver a lecture to assembled physios etc, and I was invited to volunteer as a lecture guinea pig which I did. The exercise press ups he forced (!) me to do rescued my back which until last week had remained stable 24 years on. To my horror last week my lower back went again (heavy lifting but I think with a twist). Self employed, now 54, history of disc problems, DESPAIR. Cue the Mckenzie strategy and now 4 days later it's getting better. Thank you!
This book saved my life - really! L. Canyon. NC, USA, May 16, 2006
I had severe back pain for most of my teenage years, but when I got to college my lower back hurt so much that it made it almost impossible for me to sit through lectures. The pain was so bad that I could hardly move from bed on many days. When I went to the campus clinic, I was very surprised when I was given a copy of this book as my "medicine." However, I haven't had any severe back pain since then, because I have been following the practices in this book. I have been almost entirely pain free for about five years now, and I intend to order several more copies of this book for my family members. A highly recommend book!
Really Amazing results within 24 hours P. Hayler, UK, 6 Oct 2005
You will think that I have been paid to write this but I have not. I suffered for several months from severe lower back pain and sciatica in both legs. After being told by medical profession nothing could be done except painkillers I had treatment by osteopath and accupuncture which made no difference. The book arrived yesterday and after doing the exercises last evening and more important changing my way of sitting whilst watching TV or at the Computer I find this morning the pain has almost gone already. I thoroughly recommend this book to people with low back pain and sciatica. Incidentally I am 72 and my email address is peter@peterhay.plus.com if you want to ask me any questions please do.
Great Book CJP ( Herts, United Kingdom), 26 Jul 2005
In '97 I had severe lower back pain and sciatica, due to a prolapsed disc at L5. The exercises in this book alongside 4 visits to Physio for traction fixed the problem. I stuck with the exercises and eventually became pain free. Now I use them to manage the symptoms when they start up and keep any pain at bay. I have been successfully running and cycling ever since (not all the time) to a good club standard. Can't recommend it enough...Hope you enjoy being pain free as I have and save yourself some cash too.
Best ten dollar investment I have ever made... A reader from Cleveland Ohio, January 23, 2005
After about 15 pages into this book, it hit me like a ton of bricks. No matter what you do, or what renowned specialist you see, if you don't understand why you have pain - you will not permanently lessen the pain or get rid of it all together. The first half of this book is a gold mine. It tells you why you have pain, in other words it explains the mechanics of your back and what causes pain. I spent 14 months in Physical Therapy with a herniated disk. Until my Therapist suggested this book (God Bless him for doing so), I really had no idea what I was doing or how to 'really' correct it. After I read this book twice, I was able to use the simple exercises EFFECTIVELY. After three weeks I was able to have periods of 15 to 30 minutes without PAIN. This was a breakthrough for me, as I was wearing my Tens unit 24hrs a day and taking pain pills and muscle relaxers.
Great book that saved me a lot of pain Mr R C Miall from Northamptonshire United Kingdom, December 10, 2004
After over 10 years of private treatment for a bad back and constantly taking time off work, I was told about this book by an NHS Specialist. Since then I have not had a day off work with a bad back in over 8 years. Nowadays rather than waiting for a bad bad to manifest itself I can spot the warnings signs and by increasing the exercises at that point I can resolve the back ache before it becomes a problem. A great book that has saved me a lot of pain and kept me very active - just make sure the exercise suits your particular back problem before going too far.
Thanks from one very grateful man in Ireland! Pat McNulty, Co Cork, Ireland, July 13, 2004
I am 54 and have had persistent and continous back pain since my mid 40's. I've been misdiagnosed by many physio's, been on the point of going to an orthopaedic surgeon and have slept on bare boards to try and keep comfortable. My wife bought your book, and I started the exercises slowly, figuring that as my back had been going bad for 15 years or so, it would not come overnight. But immediately there was improvement. My posture improved and slowly over a year I was almost a 100%, also sitting upright in a proper chair with your lumbar roll etc. In the past year I have been pain-free, my posture has improved and I'm even going back to crossing my legs when sitting. I have found your book easy to follow, with photographs absolutely crucial in doing the exercises correcty. Your book saved me years of pain and at roughly 16 Euro's was half the cost of one session with a physio. Many thanks!!
Congratulations! Tine Kamminga, La Mirada California, July 6, 2003
Many years ago I was visiting my family in Auckland and unfortnately had lower back problems. My brother-in-law gave me your book to read and I followed exactly your advise. I always sit with a lumbar roll, and have lumbar support in my bed at night. Your advise has been a life saver for me instead of taking medication. I have also passed it on to many friends. One of the H.M.O's here in America has also taken on your methods. Once more, congratulations!
EASY Read - saved me from surgery Mark Gehring from Portland, March 30, 2003
This book is a real easy read, with pictures of the very simple exercises. I was given this book by a neurosurgeon, after he looked at the MRI scan of my back. I have two herniated discs that were not bad enough to require surgery. I followed the directions and just as others have said, I was well in a few days. I have given the book to at least seven people. It does not work for everyone - one of my friends had a different kind of problem to which these techniques do not apply. However, six out of seven ain't bad !
Treat Your Own Back Susan Rodiek from Bryan, United States, August 25, 2002
A few years ago I had an excruciating back injury, which the most extensive therapy and treatments didn't help at all. After nearly three months of constant pain and disability, I found this book, and within five minutes of doing the first (easy) exercise, felt significant relief from the pain. Just doing a few simple postures and stretches throughout the day had me back to normal in a short time, and I still do the stretches occasionally to keep my back in good shape.
This Book Really Works! Janae Crane from San Jose, USA, April 9, 2002
I've had lower back pain since childbirth over 30 years ago. Occasionally I'd twist or turn the wrong way, and my back would go "out" for no apparent reason. Like many folks, I've tried all kinds of remedies from muscle relaxers to chiropractors, all with about the same amount of moderate success. My doctor recommended this book to me a couple of years ago. I read it through and followed the instructions to determine what kind of pain I was having, then did the exercises as instructed. Within 2 days I was almost back to normal. Within a week I was pain-free. After you're pain-free, in order to stay flexible and avoid these little mishaps the author recommends you do some of the stretching exercises regularly. I did them for a while, but after a few months I was back to my usual busy schedule, with no time to spare. Last week I bent down to pick something up, and my back went "out" again. I got the book out and started the exercises immediately. I only missed one day from work, and was pain-free within just a few days. This time I'm going to figure out a way to schedule some stretching exercises or yoga into my daily schedule. This book is a godsend!
Relief at Last! Joanne Hamilton from Vista, United States, July 18, 2001
My rheumatologist recommended I read and follow this book before he refers me to a physical therapist. I have arthritis in my spine, degenerative discs, scoliosis. I also have a confirmed diagnosis of fibromyalgia complex, with myofascial pain syndrome. After having to cease taking ibuprofen because of reflux disorder, the problems in my back began to surface, big time. Visits to an osteopath for "manipulation" brought only temporary relief, often only for 24 hours or so. I received "Treat Your Own Back" the afternoon following the worst night of my life - a really bad flare-up of all the above problems. I began with the First Aid page - following the instructions to the last period, including repeating the exercises every couple of hours. I slept very well that night, and although it took another three days to obtain significant relief (meaning I didn't have to walk with a cane), the pain did centralize and became very manageable with the prescribed pain relievers. I am totally impressed! I am an artist who has had to re-think all my methods for producing my art, including standing at an easel or counter to paint or sculpt. Exercise #4 has been a god-send for preventing back problems and re-alignment following an art session. Obviously, the problems in my back are the kind that "Treat Your Own Back" can resolve. I would recommend using this book with your physician's knowledge and understanding of the exercises.
Saved me from surgery in 1988; still love this book Janet from San Diego, United States, May 28, 2001
I had a herniated disc at L5-S1 in 1988 at the age of 33. I did not want to have surgery and found a wonderful physician who gave me this book. It saved me from surgery then and continues to be 'my friend' if I have a flare up. I have lent it to so many people and the last person didn't return it...so I am buying it again. The exercises and information on posture and lordosis maintenance are my back Bible. I am so grateful that my doctor was willing to forego surgery and gave me this book to educate me and help me heal myself. Get it, read it, use it!
Back to Good Health Violet from Philadelphia, United States, March 21, 2001 I saw three doctors about my slipped and herniated discs before one sent me to a physical therapist who recommended this book. I lost about six weeks of this past summer to excruciating pain that even Percocet could not dull. Through following the advice on posture and stretching in this book I am now pain-free and have returned to my daily activities plus working out, mountain biking, skiing, and more. I also own two McKenzie lumbar support rolls and got my boss to buy the book too. He's also become a 'McKenzite'
So good, I'm mad Randy A Hausner from Phoenix, Arizona United States, January 6, 2001 The title of my letter may confuse you. Let me explain. I found this book to be so effective in eliminating my back pain and actually helping me do it without medication or injections or surgery, that I am mad that every doctor does not recommend this book or at least the concepts and exercises to everyone suffering from low back pain. I've been diagnosed with a focal disc protrusion in L5-S1. After even 1 hour of work, I would become extremely painful and move like I was 98 years old. Sitting was torture too. I couldn't stand, yet I couldn't sit, and I was in agony. I then discovered this book. (Actually, a physical therapist recommended I read it.) So, during my routine day, when the pain and discomfort became extreme, I would sneak off by myself, and do these exercises. It was like a shot of pain killer each time I did. At first, it only alleviated the pain for about an hour or 2. I was admittedly repeating the exercises about 8 to 10 times a day. Then, the effects became more and more permanent. Today, I worked and only needed to do them twice. I'm on my way to a full recovery. So there you have it. I was suffering BADLY for about 2 months with no noticable improvement. After 3 weeks of doing what this book told me, I not only see the light at the end of the tunnel, I feel the bright rays shining on me. One more thing... I am in no way paid for saying this, and have no connection with the publishers/authors of this book. I'm just a person so happy to be feeling a lot better, that I want to spread the word. . .
This book saved my back! A reader from Ithaca, United States, November 11, 2000
About six months ago I was doing quite a lot of weight lifting which was slowly weakening my back. Being on the high school track team I decided to try the running long jump for the first time. When I landed in the sand my lower back gave out and for the next six months I had a dull pain that would stay with me all day, everyday. Some days my back felt better than others and sometimes it seemed that the only retreat I possibly had from the pain was bed rest. I spent an incredible waste of money on chiropractors that did absolutely nothing for the pain. I was beginning to become depressed because I couldn't do cross country in the fall, and going to work and school felt like going to hell and back everyday. I felt like I was too young to have back problems and I was seeking advice from everyone I could turn to. Then a student teacher of mine told me that a friend of his was using Robin McKenzie's book on how to treat your own back. It took about four or five weeks for the pain to go away, but if I hadn't discovered this book, I'm sure the pain would have lasted many more months, if not years. McKenzie's book taught me very effective techniques for treating my lower back pain and how to prevent it from recurring. If you buy this book, it is important to be patient with the techniques described. When first starting out, there could be an initial increase in the amount of pain which I experienced. If this pain increase does not go back down to how it was after about a day or if the pain becomes worse, consult with a doctor or physical therapist immediately. This was a very helpful book and I recommend it to anyone with lower back pain. It wasn't until my back was damaged that my whole life came into perspective. Nobody should deserve to live with chronic back pain.
